Over a long career as a maker of textiles I have draw heavily on my research on the decorative arts both through books and travel.  Many of my pieces reference specific styles of architecture and the decorative arts from historic and ethnic sources. The most recent large works use images photographed in Vienna.  The piece entitled “Beauty’s House” derives virtually all of its imagery from a specific building, the Secession House built in Vienna in 1908 by Joseph Olbrecht. The elements of this piece are from photos of that building.  “Viennese Cabinet” combines elements from many different objects and designs from the same period.

The specific textiles used in my work are sourced from vintage Japanese kimono fabric. Making a relationship between early 20th century design and Japanese textiles references the idea of “Japonisme”. Many of the artists, whose work has influenced my contemporary interpretations, were themselves highly influenced by Japanese art.

Since 2010 I have been working mostly on smaller pieces.  This enables me to produce more work and to work in series with one idea leading to the next.

Pattern, color, and design as well as sources from many ethnographic and historical sources have always played an important part in my work and continue to inform it.  The fashions and jewelry on this site are part of a collaborative body of work that is an ongoing series that metal smith Patricia Nelson and I have worked on together since 2010.  This has been a very productive partnership as we have known each other for more than 30 years and have many shared sensibilities about art and design history, as well as a passion for the results of layering pattern, materials, and design elements to create new expressions.
